Obaseki urges communities to protect public projects

Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, on Thursday, called on communities to protect public assets and infrastructures in their domains.

This was as he inspected a severely failed portion of Ihevbe-Afuze road, which passed through Ihevbe Community of Owan East Local Government Area in Edo North Senatorial District where he noted that the road failed as a result of blocked drainages, which caused the excess water to put pressure on the road by way of erosion.

Continuing, Governor Obaseki also observed that the wearing away of the road constituted a death trap to not only motorists plying that route, but also to residents and locals especially because there was nothing to indicate that the road had eroded, and anyone could easily fall into the gully by the road side.

He, therefore, in company of engineers contracted to reconstruct the road, proceeded to Afuze community where the headquarters of Owan-East Local Government was located to direct the LG officials to put up a barricade on the failed road portion to avoid accidents.

The governor also declared that the cost of fixing the road would be sub-charged from Owan East’s account for failing to carry out basic sanitation responsibilities like clearing of drain.

Meanwhile, he also inspected progress of rehabilitation work at the 6km Okagboro road, which led to Ekpoma, and the 9km Okpuje-Uzebba, which led to Otuo and Uzebba, both in Owan-West LGA. Both roads, the engineers explained, were set for asphalt overlay, which would commence by the middle of the month, while the 6km Okpuje-Ekpoma Axis was already in advanced stages of reconstruction.

The governor had earlier inspected the progress of work at the 4.5km Agebede Town road and the 25km Agbede-Awain road in Etsako West LGA.

Of the Agbede-Awain project, which was a new road, Governor Obaseki noted that it would have a bridge to create access and open up a large expanse of land for agricultural purposes, adding that there were many investors willing to take plant on the fertile land, hence his administration’s keenness to complete the project in standard quality.
