The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone F comprising six states in South-South yesterday commended state governors in the region for their efforts to revamp Braced Commission which was initiated to bring joint socio-economic development to the region.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its quarterly meeting which was held in Benin City, Edo State capital, the journalists also called on government in the region to check the menace of herdsmen with the recent killings in parts of Delta and Edo States.
The communiqué signed by the Zonal Vice President and Zonal Secretary; Comrades Edward Ogude and Opaka Dokubo also described Oba Ewuare II, Oba of Benin as an astute reformer, noting that the ascension of the monarch to throne of his ancestors marked the beginning of great things in the kingdom and the state at large.
They commended the Benin monarch on his ban of Community Development Associations (CDAs) which has since been backed up with legislation from the state government and the reception he accorded the leadership of NUJ in the zone when they paid him a courtesy visit.
Part of the communiqué read: “The Zone, in consideration of the importance of a workable synergy between Government and the media towards a virile society; urged state governments to be accessible, and to develop good rapport with state Councils of the NUJ as the Fourth Estate of the Realm, for better dissemination of government policies and programmes. They also commended governors who have not relented in offering support to State Councils of the Union in aid of their activities.
“It called on South-South governments owing civil servants and pensioners to utilise the Paris Club refund to clear the backlog of salary arrears and entitlements to ameliorate their plights.
“The meeting reiterated the need for members to desist from the use of social media to disparage their colleagues, the Union or any other member of the public. It called on Councils to sanction any erring member(s) accordingly”.
