Edo to fortify govt institutions, MDAs

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has revealed that one of his administration’s cardinal foci is to build and strengthen institutions, ministries, parastatals and MDAs such that they could function independently and continue to deliver on its mandate.

Represented by his Chief of Staff at a memorial lecture for late University of Benin (UNIBEN) SUG president, Williams Ubong, and the presentation of a book, ‘Expedition’, by a UNIBEN student, Lauretta Obakpolor, the governor noted that this was the only way to baulk indolence and inefficiency in the system in the present day Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the governor was awarded in recognition of his outstanding contribution to youth empowerment and development after which he stressed that issues that should dominate such symposia should be hinged on individuals being diligent in performing their responsibilities, even in the absence of scrutiny.

Governor Obaseki however disclosed that the pedestrian bridge he promised during his campaign was still on the table and the foundation block would be laid in a few weeks.

He said: “About 3 days ago your governing council visited and we told them that there will be a synergy between UNIBEN and the Benin technical college. We can invest in Benin Technical College so that UNIBEN students can attend a 3-month course in the technical college to acquire skills and it is open for you if you intend to build capacity in that area or you are on holiday".

The governor also explained that the government would leverage on UNIBEN’s 7-megawatt power plant and charged students to brainstorm on how the institution can leverage on the strategic location of Edo state as an industrial hub because of the critical infrastructure located in Edo state.

He said: "Most of the industrial pipelines pass through Edo state. We have Iyovbo, Gelegele, and Ologbo. So, what UNIBEN can do is come up with initiatives, statistics and data that can help us leverage on these natural endowments in Edo state for the better benefits of our people in terms of employment, poverty reduction and quality of life of our people."

The Student Union Government, for his support, for youth empowerment in the university community, also awarded the Governor’s Chief of staff, Mr Taiwo Akerele, while a minute silence was observed for the late Ubong.
