Edo state CPS, John Mayaki Finally Responds to N13million Allegation [Details]

Press Release:

My attention has been drawn to an online publication containing a purported petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), beseeching the esteemed anti-corruption agency to come, probe me, and probably ferret me off jail.

Edo state CPS -  John Mayaki, Obaseki
Before I scold the imps responsible for this devilry and expose them for what they really are – mere bad hats – I should grant the reader a background tale of this peculiar mess. What good is a story without a background anyway?

Certain individuals were stung to the quick when Governor Obaseki appointed me as his interim Chief Press Secretary. This was because they had candidates whom they would have preferred to occupy the position.

They have therefore stoked the furnace of malice in their hearts and simple-mindedly agreed among themselves that the most effective method to vent their frustration and disappointment with the governor for choosing me would be through a sustained campaign of calumny against my person virtually a daily basis.

Perhaps they also hoped to give me a bad name and hang me such that I will come into disfavour with the governor and he would nullify my appointment.

They therefore dutifully dedicated themselves to churning out one shoddily crafted article or the other, mostly on social media, accusing me of one perniciousness or the other.

These accusations, characteristically punctuated by contradictions, habitually exhibit an unfashionable degree of delusion, and bizarrely, they have become my daily dose of comic relief. I now consume them as a form of refreshment every evening after the day’s job has been done. When I can, I write a piece or two to tell off the false witnessers.

In the latest edition of their campaign of calumny, recently published on Facebook, the social misfits conjured a law firm with the name C.O. INEGBEDION & CO., Solicitors and Advocates of the Supreme Court into existence.

They also imaginarily located it at No. 10, Trinity Avenue, Off 1st Ugbor Road, G.R.A in Benin City. Then they pretended that this law firm was soliciting on behalf of an inexistent non-governmental organisation, “Face To Face Empowerment Initiative”, located at No. 2, Odigie Street, Gapiona Road, G.R.A, also in Benin City.

I investigated and found that neither the law firm nor the NGO actually exists in the physical realm of the world, as we yet know it.

The introductory line of the petition written to the EFCC by that imaginary law firm reads, “According to our instructions, one JOHN MAYAKI, Chief Press secretary to Governor Obaseki of Edo State has become LAWLESS, A COMMON THIEF and AN ADVOCATE OF IMPUNITY, without mincing words.

It has become apt to draw your attention to the nefarious activities being perpetrated by this man all in the guise of Good Governance and Transparency”.

Let us humour them in this game of pretence. Let us hypothesise that both the law firm and NGO do exist. We therefore have a premise to point out the fallacy inherent in the petition and expose the hare-brained initiative that spawned this petition.

It would be a monstrous disgrace to the legal profession should such a law firm base an allegation of this gravity on mere hearsay from its client. For that visage-loving NGO, Face To Face Empowerment Initiative, to exhibit preference of such a law firm to petition EFCC is another display of lack of seriousness.

Surely, they must have had enough foresight to know that in this new age, which the whistle blower plays an important part in stemming of economic injustice, great care has to be taken before making such an accusation.

Moreover, in this age of whistle blowing, why do they need to petition the EFCC in faraway Abuja when they could have as well placed the appropriate phone call to the whistle blowing hotline?

As far as genuine human capacity development is concerned, an NGO that should pride itself in developing human capacity indicating a preference for a more difficult approach in bringing a “corrupt” public office holder to book is suspect.

Such a move smacks of either underhandedness or vacuums in the intellectual capacity of the organisation’s leadership.

Both the law firm and their unfortunate client have forgotten that as a Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, I enjoy no constitutional immunity. I am not empowered to; as they claimed in the said publication, thwart all their attempts to access whatever relevant documents they believe can incriminate me.

In addition, may I remind them that in addition to promising a handsome reward, the whistle blowing policy does not demand documental evidence or an intermediary agency like EFCC?

What intelligent minds must be wondering is why none of the Press Corps, who should be victims of my alleged mismanagement, has reported me to the governor or even published it as a story in the newspapers of which they are correspondents.

If, as they allege, the state governor has swept the matter under the carpet, then what stops the said NGO from sponsoring a protest to the Government House in its quest to cry more than the “bereaved”. Since when did anything worth doing stop being worth doing well?

I challenge Face to face Empowerment Initiative to exit the cyberspace and put the publication in any of the national dailies, alongside the said EFCC petition written on its behalf by C.O.INEGBEDION & CO. so that we can meet in court for it establish its allegations against me before the law. The NGO must also not be afraid to pay damages for libel. I have no immunity, so I am ready for litigation.

However, because both the said NGO law firm do not exist, the above response is actually meant for that group which forged the petition in question and has been spreading it online.

What however remains a puzzle to me is the kind of value system and orientation that prompts otherwise intelligible minds to pout churlishly and sulk without reprieve because they did not get a political appointment? How debauched is this value system that it will overwhelm them and make them take up such unwise and outlawed arms as slander and blackmail in expressing their grief?

I believe it is an indication of the decadence governing such minds. Otherwise, is a political appointment, being an ephemeral one, worth debasing oneself with inordinate conduct? If their ambition to be Chief Press Secretary was prompted by a genuine desire to serve, why did they ensconce themselves in the recesses of sorrow when they were not appointed? Why did they subsequently habilitate themselves with boots of slander, stockings of libel, jackets of calumny, and hats of resentment?

Why have they made this appointment issue a do-or-die affair? It is saddening that at a time when the Federal Government’s Electoral Reform Panel is conducting public hearings on how to reform our election systems towards playing down or totally eradicating the do-or-die culture, some still feverishly hold on to that undesirable culture as it relates to political appointments.
