Republican Apologises for comment passed at Obama's girls

US President Barack Obama smiles at his daughters Sasha and Malia after he pardoned a turkey during a ceremony at the White House on 26 November 2014 in Washington
US President Barack Obama's daughters Sasha and Malia have been called disrespectful and classless by a Republican official for their choice of attire at a Thanksgiving ceremony.

Elizabeth Lauten, communications director for Republican congressman Stephen Fincher, made her comments in a Facebook post.

It was heavily criticised and subsequently deleted.

Ms Lauten has apologised for her "hurtful words".

She attacked the girls over their outfit choices for the annual turkey pardoning event at the White House.

Malia, 16, and Sasha, 13, stood next to their father during the ceremony.

Ms Lauten said that the girls should "try showing a little class".

"Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar," she added.

Her comment caused outrage on social media, amid accusations that she was "shaming" teenage girls.
