Akwa Ibom: PDP NWC Zones Governorship Position To Eket Senatorial Zone

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned the governorship position in Akwa Ibom State to Eket senatorial district.
This zoning arrangement automatically gives incumbent governor, Godswill Akpabio an edge against the clamour by his predecessor Victor Attah who leads a campaign through a group PDP stakeholders in the state for the race to be thrown open to all aspirants. Former minister of petroleum is also in Attah’s camp.

While Akpabio allegedly roots for the former secretary of the Akwa Ibom State government, Udom Emmanuel, Attah led group is purportedly supporting former secretary to the state government, Umanna Umanna for the position.

So far, however, about 18 aspirants have picked nomination forms to contest the position.

Leadership News reports that,  the PDP yesterday said “After a review of the decision of the enlarged State Executive Committee of Akwa-Ibom State, the National Working Committee (NWC) has accepted and fully endorsed the decision to zone the Akwa-Ibom State governorship position to Eket Senatorial Zone.

“Accordingly, the NWC expects that only aspirants from Eket Senatorial Zone will present themselves for the governorship primary election in the state.”

“In the spirit of internal democracy, the NWC promises that there will be free, fair and transparent congresses. Aspirants from Eket Senatorial Zone are therefore encouraged to fully participate in the process.”
