Court Sentences Catholic Priest to 18 years in jail for who s3xually abusing 10 male students

74-year-old Andrew Soper, a Catholic Priest formerly known as Father Laurence Soper, bagged an 18-years jail sentence after he became the fourth man at Benedict’s School in Ealing, West London to be convicted of sexually abusing kids at the school.

Soper who became a fugitive and jumped bail, was arrested and arraigned on 19 count charges of rape and other sexual offences against 10 boys at the school in the 1970s and 80s.

His conviction made the school apologize unreservedly for the “serious wrongs of the past”.

Guardian reports that during his sentencing at the Old Bailey on Thursday, Judge Anthony Bate told Soper;

“You are an intelligent man with gifts of scholarship and erudition. However, as you acknowledged during cross examination, showing a degree of insight, that is not how you will be remembered. .

Your good qualities are utterly overshadowed by the proven catalogue of vile abuse for which you are now at last held to account. Your disgrace is complete.” Soper’s disappearance to Kosovo had been “meticulously planned”, the judge said, adding: “You intended to live out your days there in obscurity.”
