Zimbabweans celebrate Mugabe’s resignation [photos/video]

The streets of Harare, Zimbabwe exploded into wild honking, cheering and singing after it was announced that President Robert Mugabe has resigned.


Robert Mugabe said he is resigning immediately and voluntarily in order to have a “smooth transfer of power” after 37 years in charge.

The letter was read out in a cheering, dancing Parliament, which had been pursuing impeachment of the 93-year-old Mugabe, the world’s oldest head of state.


People hung out of car windows, others embraced and shook hands as news spread that the 93-year-old statesman who had been ruling Zimbabwe for the past 37 years had finally relinquished power.

Happiness was palpable everywhere as people went up and down the streets, laughing and shouting at the top of their voices.



Traffic came to a standstill on one of the roads as a taxi drivers spun his vehicle, to the delight of his spectators who were celebrating with him.

 

 


 

 
Even lawmakers where not left out of the celebration as Martin Geissler, a journalist with ITV  shared a picture of  lawmakers celebrating the news of the 93year old's resignation.
