"Why I am Still using Old Cars from my predecessor instead of New Bullet Proof Jeeps" - Obaseki

The Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, said his desire to cut wasteful spending stopped him from acquiring a new bullet proof car, “which he was entitled to”.

He said his administration would cut expenditure and use available resources to help the government cope with the reality on ground.

Obaseki spoke Friday, when he received the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN).

“I am the governor of Edo State and I am entitled to a brand new bullet proof car, but I have not bought one because we cannot afford it. I am using what my predecessor left, but I have a female mechanic who is refurbishing all government cars,” he said.

The governor, who frowned at unnecessary expenditure, called on all Nigerians to re-examine their attitudes towards expenditures.

On the issue of pensioners, the governor said, “the state is not responsible for local government retirees. The local governments are well funded and they should provide accounts of their income and expenditure for the past 10 years. This would help the pensioners understand how their money was spent”.

The leader of the ANAN delegation, Barr. Felix Ahonsi, said the association was ready to collaborate with the government in accounting, auditing, training among others.
