The leadership tussle in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may soon take a new dimension as all twelve (12) of its governors might dump the party to form a new political party over the insistence of Ali Modu Sheriff to be National Chairman of the party who they believe is working for president Buhari and the APC led federal government.
You will recall that even as the ruling party in Nigeria for 16 years, the party was always encumbered with several intra-party crises, which it has always managed to overcome, latching on the incumbency factor, government’s largesse and others but the present leadership tussle may be the last straw for the once great and self acclaimed largest party in Africa.
A source close to governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has said: “The governor with his other brothers (governors of the party) are already thinking of Plan B which is to leave the party for Ali Modu Sheriff and form a new party. The source further said “that governor Fayose was convinced that the crisis in the party will not go away quickly as the federal government and president Buhari who are sponsoring Sheriff will not give up easily and we have crucial elections in Edo and Ondo coming up. They will most likely get the judiciary to make favourable pronouncements in Sheriff’s favour. We have information that Attorney General of the Federation who is an APC member is working with Sheriff and will make sure that Sheriff continue to cause crisis in our party, the source added.”
Correspondents in Ondo State spoke with Chieftain of the PDP who told us that “if this crisis in not resolved in July, governor Mimiko will have no choice but to leave the party with our gubernatorial candidate to another party. Although i hear all the PDP governors are already thinking of forming a new party so they can leave the party for Ali Modu Sheriff. They need to act fast because of our election in Ondo and Edo, the source added”.
An aide of governor Wike has also informed us that if Sheriff insists on being the party chairman, we will leave the party for him and form a new onw. All these crisis might even be a blessing he added.
