Leader of a notorious
gang that specialised in robbing people of cell phones and cash at the
Oba Ovoramwen Square, Benin City, Samson Ahigbe popularly known as
“Agada” has been shot dead by men of the Edo State Police Command.
Samson was shot dead
after a team of police investigators raided their hideouts following
alleged confession of a gang member who was caught with a stolen phone.
A press statement signed
by police spokesman, DSP Noble Uwoh, said the police arrested the gang
member – Israel Moses while attempting to unlock one of the phones
stolen from one Eze and his girlfriend.
The statement said Moses
led police to their hideouts, but the gang confronted the policemen with
arms in an attempt to evade arrest.
Uwoh said two of the robbers sustained bullet wounds but the gang leader died on the way to the hospital.
Items recovered from the
gang, according to Uwoh, are one locally made pistol, one cut to size
single barrel gun, 14 live cartridges, nine mobile phones, one Golf car
marked AY 542 BEN and N45, 000 cash.
