Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom on Wednesday condemned the rising rate of murders in the state.

Akpabio made the condemnation at the swearing in of the new Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Uwemedimo Nwoko, and five new permanent secretaries in Uyo.

He said that 168 suspected murder cases were reported in the state in 2014.

''There are cases of children who killed their parents, husbands who murdered their wives and vice versa.’’

Akpabio added that 147 murders occurred in different villages with 17 being cases of children killing their parents between September and December 2014.

''Four cases involved husbands and wives killing themselves during arguments over text messages and phone calls’’, he said.

He urged parents to pray for their children to avert such tragedies, and husbands and wives to avoid arguments over frivolous matters that could lead to death.

He also urged them to set the tone that will ensure that hoodlums and touts were contained and elections free and fair.

To the commissioner, Akpabio said ''the state wants you to commit your learning, creativity and energy to ensuring that no one breaks the law.

''We also appreciate the tremendous sense of commitment you have shown in the different offices of public trust you have been held’’, the governor said.

Akpabio also advised the permanent secretaries to stay away from politics.
