Textile dealer arrested with $1.4 m worth of drugs on his way to Cambodia

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has intercepted a textile merchant with 4.4kgs of methamphetamine worth $1.4miilion at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on his way to Cambodia.

It is the first seizure of the year at the airport and the first consignment going to Cambodia. The 40 parcels of drugs, concealed inside foodstuff, were detected during the outward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian Airline flight.

Breaking: INEC Announces Dates For 2019 General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced dates for 2019 general elections.

In a statement posted on its website Thursday, the electoral commission said it was making the announcements well ahead “in order to ensure certainty in our dates for elections, and to allow for proper planning by the Commission, political parties, security agencies, candidates and all stakeholders”.

“To that extent, the 2019 Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on Saturday, 16th
February 2019, while the Governorship/State Assembly/Federal Capital Territory Area Council Elections will hold on Saturday 2nd March 2019.”

Breaking: Presidency confirms President Buhari is Returning on Friday

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to return to the country tomorrow, Friday March 10, 2017, presidency has confirmed. 

The President left the country on January 19, 2017 for a vacation, during which he had routine medical check-ups. The holiday was extended based on doctors' recommendation for further tests and rest.

Senate orders Customs boss, Hameed Ali, to appear before it in his Uniform

The senate today ordered Comptroller General of Custom, Hameed Ali, to appear before it on March 15th in his complete Customs Officers uniform. The senate gave the order following the refusal of Customs to comply with its directive to suspend the collection of duty on old vehicles. Mrs Obaseki launches "Edo Women for Agricultue Programme" as 500 widows become poultry farmers

Edo State governor’s wife Mrs. Betsy Obaseki has distributed birds to 500 widows to become poultry farmers.

She said this was part of the government’s campaign promises. 

The widows, who were given feeds that would enable them feed the birds for three months, were trained in how to rear birds.

A group of Auchi Polytechnic lecturers have reacted to the appointment of the new Acting Rector, Dr. Sanusi Momodu Jimah, describing the process as fraudulent.

The lecturers who didn't want to be named claimed that Dr. Momodu was not qualified and was not shortlisted after the interview.

The aggrieved lecturers accused Prince Tony Momoh, a close friend to the appointed Acting Rector as responsible for the skewing of the outcome.

Edo First Lady appeals for passage of Gender, Violence Bills

First Lady of Edo State, Mrs Betsy Obaseki, has appealed to the Edo State House of Assembly to speedily pass two pending bills on gender violence elimination.

Mrs Obaseki made this plea when she paid an advocacy visit to the House to mark the 2017 International Women’s Day celebration in Benin yesterday.
On the importance of the bill, she noted that speedy passage of the bills – Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill 2016 and Law to Eliminate Violence in Private and Public Place – would help to bridge the existing gap in gender issues.

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun state has declared a two day curfew in Ile-Ife over alleged clashes between Hausa and Yoruba communities in the state which has led to the death of five people.
In a statement signed by Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, the Director of Communications and Strategy, office of the Osun state Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, it said “the curfew, which will be between 6pm to 7am, takes effect from Wednesday March, 8th, 2017 and will be in force till Friday.”
