UNIBEN SUG trains 40 students on skill acquisition

The Students Union Government of the University of Benin has trained over 40 students in different entrepreneurship skills to empower them to be self-reliant to reduce the rate of unemployment among youths in the country.

Speaking at the end of a two-week Skills Acquisition programme, the Vice President of the SUG, Miss Sonia Obasuyi disclosed that the students were trained on how to make; bags, beads, shoes using Ankara clothes; screen printing, dying of cloths and others which are part of commodities that drive the nation’s economy.

She stated youths cannot continue to depend on government for civil service job adding that the mindset of youths who are future leaders should be focused on creating jobs and not getting employed.

According to Obasuyi, “The program has been able to train 40 students in different entrepreneurship skills.

“We believe that the government can’t create all the jobs for us after school so we were able to come up with a plan to train the students to become self-sufficient. Because the labour market is competitive and if you don’t hold on to what you have, you may lose what you are about to get”. She stated

On his part, the Edo state House of Assembly speaker, Rt Hon Justine Okonoboh urged the students to desist from waiting for government to give them job but rather engage in activities that would empower and better their lives.

Okonoboh cautioned them against examination malpractice, cultism and prostitution and encouraged them to queue into the agricultural policy of the state government which will train over 150, 000 agric entrepreneur in the next three years.

He further urged the students to expand their horizon by getting technically proficient as a university degree doesn’t guarantee success in life.

“The level that drives the economy is the technical level. That is why this government has decided to revamp the technical school”.
