Plot to impeach Edo Speaker thickens

Indications yesterday emerged that plot to impeach the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Justin Okonoboh may have thicken with the sudden suspension of plenary.

It was gathered that the house had to resume its two months recess to attend to the commissioner's list which was scheduled to be presented to the Assembly by Governor Godwin Obaseki on Monday.

However, the Speaker, Okonoboh who dismissed the allege impeachment plot said the house was united and represent the hope of the people of the state.

Okonoboh in an interview with journalists, explained that the postponement of sitting was due to ongoing renovations within the assembly complex.

But, it was learnt that the Monday plenary took a different dimension when the required 16 signatures to impeach the speaker was incomplete thereby heating the politics of the house.

Okonoboh had led other of his loyalists to meet with the governor at the Government house to resolve the matter which according to an Assembly source is been plotted by former Speaker, Victor Edoror from Edo Central Senatorial district.

Okonoboh said, "First, we are renovating the chambers. It is a 24-member house. We cannot think and reason in the same way; we think differently. But what we do is to struggle to present a common front before the people of Edo State.

"In the house, the minority will have their say and the majority will have their way. It is just the normal thing; there is no division."

Also reacting, the member representing Oredo‎ East constituency at the Assembly, Hon Chris Okaeben, affirmed: "You will recall that some time ago, some journalists paid me a visit in my office‎, when this rumour was also thrown in the domain that there was a plan for the erstwhile speaker to come back. But we did play it down because, of course, we wanted to manage information.

"But like we say in our local parable, when a rat has tasted sweet fish, there is every tendency that the rat wants to go back to that fish to bite from it. So, that is the way I describe it. There is every tendency that he wants to come back. Some of us do not sleep well at night because we do not know what will happen next. But there is nothing to fear.‎"
