Felony: Court remand Edo activist

An Oredo Magistrate Court sitting in Benin City, has remanded an Edo state based activist, one Mr Kola Edokpaiyi in prison custody for treasonable felony.

The prominent activist was said to have be rounded up by men of the state police command at his Benin residence at the early hours of Tuesday.
 
He was remanded yesterday on two count charge of Treason and attempted invasion of the state with foreigners with an intent to cause mayhem.

The charges are punishable under sections 38 and 516 of Criminal Code Cap 48 Volime Two Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria as applicable in Edo State.

Edokpaiyi and one Curtis Ugbo now in prison custody were said to have committed an offense of felony against youths in Nigeria by instigating them for unwarranted protest.

Also, they were charged for organising a group of intellectuals some of who are foreigners to invade the NPDC office on Sapele road, government house complex and the state house of assembly with threats to use the militant wing of the Benin Solidarity Movement, BSM to invade some oil communities in Edo South.

The Chief Magistrate Grade One, P. I Foy-Yamah said she had no jurisdiction to hear the matter and stated that the court will write the DPP for its recommendations.

She therefore adjourn the case to 29th June for mention.
