Buhari, Manchester United Mourn Football fans who died at Viewing Centre in Calabar


 Manchester United has reacted to the death of about 30 football fans who were electrocuted in a viewing centre in Calabar, south east Nigeria, while watching the Europa League game between Manchester United and Anderlecht on Thursday, April 20.

According to reports, a high-tension cable fell inside the viewing centre at the Iyang-Esu of the Calabar Municipal Local Government causing an explosion which killed about 30 and injured many. [see story here]

The football club tweeted: ''Our thoughts go out to the United fans, their friends and families affected by the tragedy in Calabar, Nigeria yesterday.''




Similarly, Nigeria's President, Buhari has also expressed shock and sadness to the tragic event.

The President commiserates with the government and people of Cross River State, and football fans nationwide over the unfortunate incident.

In a statement by his Senior media aide, Garba Shehu, Buhari commends the State Government for the prompt action in setting up a commission of inquiry into the incident, and its offer of assistance to the victims and their families.

''The President offers his deepest condolences to the family and friends of the mostly young victims, whose sudden demise is a big blow not only to their families, but also to the football-loving nation.

He prays that God Almighty will grant the souls of the departed eternal rest and comfort all who mourn their irreparable loss. '' the statement said,
