Benin Solidarity Movement Condemns Arrest and illegal Detention of Group Leader, Curtis Ugbo

The Benin Solidarity Movement has condemned in clear terms, the arrest and illegal detention of  Curtis Ugbo, who led  youths on a peaceful protest against  oil companies and N.P.D.C in Edo State, for lack of social responsibility and non- employment of Edo State indigenes in their host communities.

The group prior to their protest [see here] had visited the palace of the Oba of Benin, Government House, State Security Service, the Commissioner of police and the Edo State House of Assembly to intimate them of their activities.

On their visit to N.P.D.C , the group submitted their well documented proposal, demanding for the employment of about 1000 youths, the building of health care hospitals and schools in the oil producing communities.

They also protested the involvement of certain persons in the state who they claim have taken advantage of N.P.D.C, taking all the contracts in the state and practically invested nothing in return as cooperate social responsibility.

According to some members of the group who reached out to us on phone, the leader of the group, Curtis Ugbo, received a call a  day after the civil protest, requesting the presence of the group to the State Government House, which they obliged and attended, not knowing the meeting was a trap to arrest their leader.

Consequently after the meeting, the leader of the group Curtis Ugbo was asked to follow some government officials  to the State police Headquarters in Benin where he has now been detained for almost 48hours without charges.

The group has therefore questioned the ill motive behind the arrest, when they were just protesting the nonchalant attitude of N.P.D.C and the oil companies in the state; leading to the non inclusion of Edo youths in their activities which has now rendered  most youths in the state unemployed with no credible means of livelihood or practical training to earn future employment , while so much resources are been exploited by the companies.

They say the action of the police and state government affirms the statement of the Vice President Prof. Osibanjo when he visited the Region, that the elites in Niger Delta area to be blamed for the abuse and neglect suffered by the people in the region.

They wonder why some  people in the state  would want to fight against the upliftment of the state and  a better life for Edo youths.

"The fight against corruption from the presidency is part of what is been witnessed in Edo State by some people who are bent on stealing our collective wealth as a nation by the illegal detention of Curtis Ugbo. Justice must be affirmed at all times; an injury to one is an injury to all.

The group uses this medium to call on Vice President Prof.Osibnajo who has been mandated by President Buhari to look into the plights of the region. The failure of our society to question wrongs will deepen the problems facing the present leadership of this nation.

There is a constitutional right to protest; the law enforcement agencies should not become agents working for the selfish interest of the mindless elites from NIger Delta". a member of the group said.
