CROSS RIVER STATE RECORDS FIRST CASE OF LASSA FEVER


 A 22-year old woman, Itodo Christabel, was on Wednesday confirmed dead from Lassa fever in Calabar, capital of Cross River State. The deceased, who had taken ill in Benue State, reportedly requested an unnamed hospital where she was being treated to refer her to Eburutu Barracks clinic in Calabar to meet her husband who works with the military.

From Eburutu clinic, she was taken to the Navy Hospital, Calabar, where she was managed for some days before being referred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital where she died less than 12 hours after admission.
The CMD assured all medical personnel who came in contact with the victim , have been quarantined , while the health minister and the director, Center for disease control have been officially communicated. Meanwhile the commmisioner for health in Cross River State, Dr Inyang Asybong has confirmed the outbreak of lassa fever in the state. 




A statement by the permanent secretary in the ministry, Dr Joseph Bassey on-behalf of the commissioner revealed that the commissioner has already mandated the state epidemiology team to begin contact and tracing of all patients contacts immediately for effective monitoring. 
Lassa Fever is an acute viral harmorrhagic illness that occurs in West Africa and transmitted to humans via contact with food or household items contaminated with rodent urine of faeces.
