President Buhari Reacts to the University of Maiduguri Bomb Blast

     President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a condolence message to the people of Borno state after the bomb blast that rocked a Mosque in the University of Maiduguri.

    In his condolence message, President Buhari said, ''I received the sad news of the terrorist attack on the University of Maiduguri this morning.''

    ''My heartfelt condolences go to the University Community, the families of the victims, and the Govt and people of Borno State.'' 


Early this morning at about 6:30 am an explosion rocked the university while some students and staff of the university were observing their early morning prayers.
                         

According to the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Damian Chukwu,  a 7-year-old boy was identified as one of the suicide bombers that attacked the University .

    "At about 5:45 a.m. a mobile police officer who is on duty sighted a suicide bomber who was trying to scale the fence at Gate Five of the university.

    Suspicious of his movement, the mobile police officer instantly gunned him down and his bomb exploded and killed him instantly," the CP said.

    "The second suicide bomber, a seven-year-old, detonated the second explosive at the senior staff quarters mosque in the university where a professor and four persons were killed and 15 persons sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to the hospital," he added.

Professor Aliyu Usman Mani, a Director of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maiduguri was among those killed in the attack. 

Meanwhile, three female suicide bombers attacked Madagali Market, Adamawa State, on Friday, killing themselves and six others.

The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed that one of the female suicide bombers died with a baby strapped on her back.


    "So far, we have nine dead, including the three female suicide bombers, while 14 others sustained various degree of injuries." added the Coordinator of NEMA for Adamawa and Taraba Operation Office, Sa’ad Bello,

The suicide bombers blew up themselves while approaching a security check point, where vehicles are stopped and screened before being allowed into the town.

    "The suicide bombers blew up themselves after they were intercepted by local vigilantes stationed at the check point and already two vigilantes lost their lives in the process,"Ladi Musa, a local resident, said.

The state government, while condemning the incident, urged the public to be more vigilant and report suspicious persons, objects and movements to security agencies.

The State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Ahmad Sajoh, said that the injured were taken to Michika General Hospital for medical attention.

Mr. Sajoh assured that government had made all necessary arrangement to cater for the injured and their relations staying with them at the hospital.
